The Bathroom

In The Bathroom, I continue my work of dance, theater and music, that, to me, are complementary. This complementarity is necessary to best express what always touches me. I also maintain what is my own in every creation: the freshness and humor that brings more to its depth.

There are five performers, whose instruments are their voices and their bodies: the man in his bathroom, his wife, and the workers who have to repaint the premises.

The Bathroom deals with the great challenge to man. Not the human being, but the "stronger sex".

This performance is a journey through the intimacy of the contemporary man, trying to understand his story since birth, his fears in the face of women and his doubts before himself. How does a "new" man respond when faced with his weaknesses and failures? But also, who are these men who seek love?

And for this I rely on the book by Jean-Philippe Toussaint that is filled with humor and sensitivity...

A man, left to himself, is locked in his bathroom. Nothing makes him leave, but two workers who must repaint the conjugal apartment.

I try to place myself, without judgement, before this man, and understand the upheaval in which he finds himself, as women have also become "new" women.

But beware: The Bathroom is not a sexist performance that blames men. It is a way of speaking about the "stronger sex" while honoring him.

It is not only the woman that is a "Muse": man, too, inspires, challenges and calls out to us...

SET DESIGN

A white bath-pool occupies the entire stage. This structure is filled with water and also provides a screen for video.

Behind the bath-pool, a bathroom wall, in immaculate tile, enables performers to repaint the bathroom for "a possible renewal", and also serves as a musical wall. This is built into five parts, mixing wood and iron, enabling its use as a percussion instrument.
